On October 10, 2026, Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu conducted a significant Continuing Medical Education (CME) programme titled “Pain Management – An Essential Part of Palliative Care.” The event coincided with World Palliative Care Day and aimed to shed light on the crucial role of effective pain management in elevating the quality of life for patients diagnosed with cancer and other critical illnesses.
Held at the college auditorium, the CME attracted around 130 participants, which included consultants, postgraduate residents, and healthcare practitioners from various district hospitals and private sectors. This gathering not only enhanced professional knowledge but also fostered interdisciplinary cooperation and sharing of clinical insights on palliative care and pain management.
In conjunction with the event, a special palliative care file was launched to emphasize the necessity of enhancing palliative care services. This initiative underscored the need for a structured approach towards treating patients afflicted with cancer and other serious health conditions.
The programme took shape under the guidance of Dr. Ashutosh Gupta, Principal and Dean of GMC Jammu, with the organizing committee comprising notable figures like Dr. Rajesh Mahajan (Organising Chairperson), Dr. Madan Katoch (Co-Chairperson), and several other esteemed doctors involved in various capacities.
The scientific agenda featured enriching lectures and stimulating panel discussions. Topics included effective pain assessment, management strategies for cancer pain, judicious opioid use, and the holistic approach to palliative care. These discussions put a spotlight on the importance of compassionate communication and a multidisciplinary strategy to mitigate physical, emotional, social, and spiritual suffering.
Dr. Jasmine Chaudhary and Dr. Heena Saini anchored the programme, ensuring the sessions flowed seamlessly, promoting engagement among the attendees. Meanwhile, a poster competition themed “The Last Chapter Can Still Be Beautiful” encouraged participants to creatively express their understanding of palliative care, focusing on dignity and compassion during the end of life.
The CME closed with a renewed dedication to integrate effective palliative care practices into everyday clinical work, ensuring prompt pain relief and compassionate care for patients battling serious illnesses.
